How EV Charging Works
Electric Vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly popular, and as technology evolves and improves, many people are choosing to make the switch from traditionally fuelled vehicles to their electric-counterparts.
Often, however, people are concerned about the battery life and range of an EV, and how to charge one. Filling your car up with fuel is easy, yet charging an electric car is often made out to be a little more complicated.
Yet, once you get to grips with charging an electric vehicle, the whole process will be easy.
How Electric Car Charging Works
Charging an electric vehicle is more simple than you might initially think; plug your car into a charger that is connected to an energy source to fuel up and this electricity is then stored in a large battery pack that powers the electric motor, to get you from A to B and beyond.
Most EV owners choose to charge their cars at home, at a workplace, or at a public charge point, when the car is parked for a long time. However, you don’t need to wait for your battery to drop to 0% to charge it up again; you can plug it in whenever it’s parked to keep the battery topped up and ready to go.
How To Charge An Electric Car
At Home Charging
If you want to start each day with a ‘full tank’, charging your car at home will make sure that you’ve got all the driving range that you’ll need.
Gone of the days of driving to the local petrol station to refuel, as electric vehicle charging points can be installed in any location where enough power is available.
In fact, you will be able to charge your vehicle using a typical domestic three-pin socket, however, having an at-home EV charger will be a much faster option.
Typically, an at-home EV charger will deliver your car with around 7kW of power, whereas vehicle manufacturers will limit the current taken from a standard 3-pin socket to the equivalent of 2.3Kw
Therefore, a 7kW home charger will deliver your vehicle with around three times as much power, three times faster than using a household socket!
